Interview Best Practice: Do Not Say Bad Things About Your Current/Previous Employers

Yes, I get that you had a horrible boss and the company did not care about its employees. The reality is work may not be all unicorns and butterflies. Yet, when on a job interview, please refrain from bashing your employer. You might ask why you should not be honest. The problem with this kind of honesty is that talent acquisition professionals and hiring managers will begin to draw conclusions about you, rightly or wrongly. You might come across as a complainer or a malcontent if they hear you disparaging a former boss or company, and very few places desire those types in their workforce. Besides, there really is no need. It takes the focus from what you can do for a new company and instead places it on your current/previous work relationships. If you are looking for a new job because of a toxic work environment, simply say that you have not found the work environment conducive to be able to do your best work.  If pressed, you can tell the interviewer what work environment or relationships energize you. You keep from dwelling on negativity and instead come up with a positive message. In this way, you show yourself to be the professional that they want on their team.
